Electrical Contact Reliability

The reliability of an electrical contact is the probability to ensure the circuit fault-free switching under certain condition, such as voltage, current, switching frequency, load type and working environment, etc.

Generally, the fault of electricalcontacts usually resulting from poor contactin the low voltage application, and from welding in the medium and high voltage application. Therefore, in order to improve the reliability of electrical contacts, precious metal alloy contacts with superior corrosion resistance are usually used in the low voltage application while contact materials with high welding resistance are usually used in the medium and high voltage use.

Some practical designs can be used in order to improve the reliability of electrical contacts. For instance, dust-proof structure (closed type) design can be adoptedto reduce the impact of the environment; airtight structure design (pre-sealed with inert gas)are used to avoid harmful gases; lubrication is used in sliding contacts. In the case of high current breaking, current limiting, magnetic blowout and other auxiliary technology are designed to protect the contacts and improve the reliability.
